Cebu, Philippines Travel Tips: Booking an Airbnb

When planning a trip to Cebu in the Philippines, the first two things most travelers look for are flights and accommodation. In this post, I'd like to share my experience with booking Airbnb stays in Cebu and the Philippines.

Please keep in mind that everything here is based on my personal experience  it's not a definitive guide, just some helpful pointers.

Who Is Airbnb Best Suited For?

I'd especially recommend Airbnb for those planning a longer stay. Prices are significantly lower compared to hotels and resorts, and you can find genuinely great places at very reasonable rates. That said, the opposite can also be true — you might end up with a disappointing experience. It's very much a hit-or-miss situation. Reviews can be unreliable, and listings are often not described in enough detail to give you a full picture.

When Should You Book?

I recommend booking your Airbnb at least three months in advance. If you're traveling during peak seasons summer or winter holidays book even earlier. If you find yourself needing to book just one month out, I'd suggest going with a hotel instead. I'll explain why below.

Where Should You Stay?

Most Airbnb listings in Cebu are located in large condominium buildings in the city center or on Mactan Island. Monthly rates typically range from 35,000 to 42,000 PHP.

Important: Always check whether condo maintenance fees, electricity, water, and internet are included in the price. If not explicitly listed, they're usually included — but always confirm directly with the host in writing. Some hosts may change their story later, so make sure everything is clearly documented.

The best-value listings get booked quickly, so the earlier you book, the better your options.

Tips for Choosing the Right Room

Hate bugs? Book a higher-floor unit. The higher you go, the less likely you are to encounter insects.

Avoid listings that charge a separate cleaning fee. In most cases, these hosts outsource cleaning to condo staff, and the results tend to be subpar — think unpleasant odors and poorly cleaned spaces.

Don't rush your booking. The best rooms go fast on Airbnb. If you're in a hurry and need something quickly, a budget hotel will serve you better and save you from regret.

Avoid single-story or ground-level houses. Even if they look clean and affordable, standalone houses or local village-style accommodations (barangay homes) are often poorly located — transportation is limited, and when it rains, getting around becomes extremely difficult. Skip these entirely.

I hope this helps you find a great place to stay and have a wonderful time in Cebu!
